Dementia affects the chemistry of the brain, causing loss of memory and intellectual functioning, personality changes and ultimately physical deterioration. Most commonly, dementia is the result of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease affects 4% to 5% of persons at the age of 65, and a staggering 30% of adults at the age of 80. Other triggers include AIDS, Vascular damage and alcohol abuse.
Using mice as a model for Alzheimer’s disease
Mice can be used to mimic Alzheimer’s disease in humans. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Currently there are no effective treatments so mice models offer one approach to both understanding and developing treatments for Alzheimer’s. Here we see mice digging and burrowing.
