Alzheimer’s South Africa is the leading provider of support, education, training and information on matters pertaining to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in South Africa. Dementia affects the chemistry of the brain, causing loss of memory and intellectual functioning, personality changes and ultimately physical deterioration. Most commonly, dementia is the result of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease affects 4% to 5% of persons at the age of 65, and a staggering 30% of adults at the age of 80. Other triggers include AIDS, Vascular damage and alcohol abuse.
